What Is That Green Circle On Your Website and Business Card?

This circle is an enso, a Japanese symbol and concept strongly associated with Zen. It symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, and the void. The opening may express various ideas, for example that the enso is not separate, but is part of something greater, or that imperfection is an essential and inherent aspect of existence.

A man with glasses sitting on the groundIn Zen painting, the enso symbolizes a moment when the mind is free to simply let the body/spirit create. The brushed ink of the circle is usually done on silk or rice paper in one movement and there is no possibility of modification: it shows the expressive movement of the spirit at that time.

I thought the enso captured the quality of the spontaneity of a productive counseling session, as well as being a reminder of the circle of life we are all on and the incompleteness of it that often causes us to struggle. It’s simple beauty is also a reminder of what we can create when we are in alignment between our mind and body; that is, how mindful we are being at a given time.

As to why it’s green, it’s known to be a soothing, calming color.

I hope you find this symbol as inspirational as I do.
